Photography And How It's Used:
Doing this research helped me to decide which elements I would like to adapt into my own magazine and what to avoid doing.

Response To Focus Group:
· Having a focus group and asking other students was extremely helpful when it came to researching before creating my magazine. This gave me the opportunity to ask fellow teenagers what they would be most interested in seeing in a magazine and what would mostly appeal to them.
Having a focus group helped me as they informed me of what their favourite genre was and who their favourite artists were. By asking them about this it helped me to decide who to include in my magazine based on my chosen genre. I also asked them about their current working status to get a vague idea about how much other students were willing to pay for a magazine.
This focus group made me realise that many students, like myself, do not have a job and depend on a set amount of money to spend on leisure things. I took this into consideration when choosing what free gifts/prizes to include as I wanted it to be worth the money people were paying for it.
My general findings from the focus group was that not many people considered my genre as their favourite and were much interested in other genres such as Pop. This did not deter me from my original genre idea though as there are already many famous Indie Rock artists which not many people realise are part of the genre.
My initial idea is still the same but I have just taken the price in to consideration a lot more. Although nobody in my group mentioned my chosen genre I do believe that my target audience would be very interested in what my magazine has to offer them as it is set as a reasonable price and includes artists/articles/free gifts which cater to their interests.

Social Class & Demographics:
When planning my magazine I decided I would try to cater to
all social classes but mainly middle class. I will adhere to them by pricing my
magazine reasonably at £1.99 as, after researching, I know this is a very
acceptable price for middle class people.
I did a
lot of research before deciding on a price as I wanted my magazine to be a
comfortable price for my target social class. I knew that if I did not research
then they would not be less interested in purchasing it if it was quite
expensive and, therefore, I would have failed to appeal to my target social
class. For example: Vogue is quite a prestigious and is mostly aimed at upper class so it is priced at £4.10 whereas magazines aimed at the middle class are £3.80 at the most.
I used
the combination of research about my genre and my research about my target
social class to decide what free gifts to include in my magazine. As my target
social class is middle class I decided to include competitions to win tickets
to festivals and concerts as not all of my readers would be able to afford the
tickets. I also decided that as a free gift I would include a CD with every
issue featuring songs from upcoming bands that are yet to be widely discovered
as a lot of Indie artists are quite underground.
This social class table will help me when creating my
magazine as I can develop a vague idea as to what my audience would be
interested in reading about. For example: if they have a job then they may be
trying to save money and I could include prizes of free music/include articles
about how to save music when going to see your favourite artist or buying
albums and/or merchandise.
Costume Ideas:
When designing my outfits I took inspiration from when I researched fashion of Rock and Idea fans. Some of my outfits are more Rock based (such as the first two from the left) and one is more Indie based (the furthest right). I wanted to adapt both genres into my styles as there was not a specific fashion for Indie Rock fans. My third costume is a nice balance of both genres and I would like to either recreate this outfit or the last one when creating my magazine.

Fashion Moodboard:
Fonts And Colour Scheme Of My Magazine:
I chose these fonts as similar fonts are used for other magazines of my genre. My colour scheme was based on colours which would mostly engage female teenagers as that is mostly what my target audience consists of.

Reader Profile Research:
Kerrang!
has conducted this reader profile to help decide what to include when creating
their magazine. By creating a reader profile they can see the percentage of
females to males, ages of readers and class which will help them decide what to
include in their magazine.
This
reader profile shows that there are more male readers to female readers and
this is incredibly helpful when they are choosing what to advertise in their
magazine. They will most probably choose things which interest both genders but
some will be more aimed towards males.
The
ABC1 profile helps the editors when deciding what the price of their magazine.
The percentage shows that nearly half of their readers are middle class. This
helps them decide a price as it shows that the readers can’t afford an
expensive magazine but can afford one that is in between (not to expensive but
not cheap).
The age
range shows the magazine the percentage of readers in each age group. These
percentages are very helpful as they can include features and advertisements which
will target a specific age group. They will most probably choose artists which
are either close to the age of the largest percentage or an artist/band that
will interest that targeted age group.
Kerrang! and all other magazines
do extensive research such as this before creating their magazine as it gives
them a clear idea of what their readers will be interested in. It helps the editors
decide what to include based on what will appeal to their target audience. As
Kerrang! is a music magazine they can use the age range and gender ratio to
choose artists which are either close to their age or are the same gender. A
reader profile helps editors decide what to include based on the results and what
will most likely appeal to their target/main audience.
